Star Birth Clouds - Eagle Nebula||
From "Lines to the Evening Star"
Thou fair-haired angel of the evening,
Now, whilst the sun rests on the mountains, light
Thy bright torch of love; thy radiant crown
Put on, and smile on our evening bed!
Smile on our loves; and, while thou drawest the
Blue curtains of the sky, scatter thy silver dew
On every flower that shuts its sweet eyes
In timely sleep. Let thy west wind sleep on
The lake; speak silence with thy glimmering eyes,
And wash the dusk with silver.

Space and the Universe
I hope the "Space and Universe" material included here provides a pleasant and stimulating view of the truly awesome backdrop against which we live our daily lives.|
The scale is almost too vast to contemplate, and our beautiful world seems so vulnerable to the forces at play in the universe. Our wars and strife appear relatively meaningless in the grander scheme of things; - all peoples working towards a common goal would seem to provide a more profitable approach to long term survival.
However, taking a long-term or sustainable view is unfortunately not a practical pre-requisite of the way we currently live, i.e. capitalism for most of us. The opposite is more the norm, "live now, pay later" being a common theme, on both a financial and moral basis - with our nationalistic tendencies often being re-enforced by politics, religion, sport and global competitiveness.
As capitalism is fundamentally an exploitative philosophy, where does it lead when there are few assets and few peoples left to exploit in our small world? As a sustainable philosophy it seems, to me, doomed to failure in the longer term - at least in the context of developing an ennobling and civilised society. However, we currently seem incapable of any other approach - and there are, after all, such enticing short term benefits!
In contemplating the grander scheme of the universe, I wonder whether "able, blinkered man" will extend his current simple philosophy to the rampant exploitation of the wider universe, or whether he will have to make a quantum leap to a higher intellectual plane merely to survive. I suppose time will tell, although not being around to witness it seems a poor excuse for a "laissez-faire" attitude?
These pages will undergo continual development as new images and ideas become available. Links are also provided to many of the excellent and more technically comprehensive sites on Space and the Universe available on the web.
